Leveraging the Human Microbiome to Develop Novel Therapeutics

Recent work by the Human Microbiome Project has suggested that there is significant physiological impact on human hosts imparted by their microbiomes. This includes protection from infection by pathogenic microbes as well as alteration of the host’s susceptibility to inflammatory and/or auto-immune diseases (e.g., acne). Therefore, our microbiomes can play a large part in our everyday health and well-being, or they
can contribute to health problems depending on our own genetics, diet, and lifestyle.
